The game follows the adventures of protagonist Zidane Tribal, a thief from a group of bandits called Tantalus, as he joins forces with Princess Garnet Til Alexandros XVII and her personal guard Steiner to save her kingdom from an evil sorcerer named Kuja. The game features an active-time battle system which allows players to input commands for their characters during battle. Players can also customize their characters with equipment and abilities that can be learned through experience points or acquired through side quests. The game also features a unique card-based mini-game called Tetra Master which allows players to collect cards that can be used to battle other players or NPCs. Final Fantasy IX has been praised by critics for its story, characters, visuals, music, and gameplay mechanics. Its story is full of emotion and drama as it follows Zidane’s journey from thief to hero while exploring themes such as friendship, loyalty, love, betrayal, and redemption.
