The Rugby World Cup 2011 was an international rugby union tournament that was held in New Zealand from 9 September to 23 October 2011. It was the seventh Rugby World Cup, a quadrennial event organised by the sport’s governing body, the International Rugby Board (IRB). The tournament was won by New Zealand, who defeated France 8–7 in the final at Eden Park in Auckland. The tournament saw one of the most competitive and globally followed sporting events, with millions of viewers tuning in from around the world. The tournament began with 20 teams competing in four pools of five teams each. The top two teams from each pool advanced to the quarter-finals, where they were joined by the two best third-placed teams. From there, it was a knockout competition until the final. In total there were 48 matches played over 44 days, with a total attendance of 1.2 million people. The pool stage saw some exciting matches, with some unexpected results and close finishes. England and Scotland both made it through to the quarter-finals but were knocked out by France and Wales respectively. Australia also made it through to the semi-finals but were beaten by New Zealand in a thrilling match that went down to the wire. In the end it was New Zealand who emerged victorious after a tense final against France which ended 8–7 in their favour. The tournament provided some great entertainment for fans all over the world and showcased some of the best rugby talent on offer today. It also highlighted how far rugby has come since its inception as a sport back in 1823.
